Wharoonga Illuka (children by the sea) Dance Group

The dances tell stories about the community, of the land, relationships, and the culture of the people. There are different dances for different communities and they tell different stories. Many dances have been passed on century after century, generation after generation, and they are just as important to Indigenous people today as they were when they were first performed.

There are many Indigenous dance groups in Australia that perform to keep culture alive, to keep passing on stories to our young people and to teach non-Indigenous people about the diversity of Indigenous Australia Learning about Indigenous society and culture through dance is a great opportunity.

Nowra East Public School has been developing partnerships with people from the local indigenous community contributing significantly to the ongoing journey of reconciliation. Learning different indigenous dances enables boys to become men and being honest with each other and asking for help if you need it. It's about helping men to understand each other. It's about finding yourself and helping each other through life.

The Dance Group has conducted many public performances at other schools and for local events in the Shoalhaven. They have given outstanding performances at our NAIDOC Week assemblies and flag raising ceremonies.

NEPS Choir

Our wonderful choir is an extra-curricular activity at Nowra East PS. Choir consists of students from Years 3 to 6.

Through choir, students learn to sing both melody and harmony, developing their musical skills and teamwork. In Term Four, Year 2 students are invited to come along to choir rehearsals to see if they enjoy the experience enough to join the following year.

Each year, the choir learns 8 to 10 new songs, rehearsing once a week to prepare for various performances. We take every opportunity to showcase our talents and, as a highlight, perform annually at the Shoalhaven Music Festival.

Participation in choir not only helps students improve their vocal abilities but also fosters a sense of community and confidence.
