Additional learning support
We provide targeted assistance for students who need adjustments to succeed at school. This includes small group intervention, one-to-one support, personalised learning plans, and specialist programs. Our team works with classroom teachers to ensure strategies are embedded in everyday learning.
Support that fits your child's needs
Some students need extra support to feel confident and do their best at school. We work closely with families to make support plans and adjustments that suits each child’s needs.
Additional learning support can include:
- teachers and support staff working together with families (and students, if needed)
- specialist support for students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)
- providing tailored programs to help high potential and gifted students with their advanced learning needs
-
small group tutoring to provide targeted literacy and numeracy support for students
-
regular check-ins to review and update the planned supports
-
changes to the classrooms:
- accessible classrooms
- assistive technology
- instructional resources
-
extra guidance, simpler content or different focus during lessons
-
assessment adjustments:
- more time
- simpler language
- breaks during tasks
- different ways to complete a task (e.g. oral presentations instead of written tasks).
We know when a student needs help when:
- teachers notice changes in learning or behaviour
- reviewing assessment results and learning progress
- parents and carers raise concerns or ask for support.
Adjustments are planned with parents and carers. They are reviewed regularly and changed when needed. If you think your child may need extra help, contact us.
Learning and support team
At Nowra East Public School, our Learning and Support team works alongside students, teachers, and families to ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed. We provide tailored support to meet the diverse learning, social, emotional, and wellbeing needs of our students, recognising that all children learn in different ways and at different rates.
Our team includes specialist teachers, School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs), and allied health partnerships who work collaboratively to:
• Identify and support students requiring additional adjustments to access the curriculum
• Develop and implement personalised learning plans that build on individual strengths and target priority areas for growth
• Provide in-class support, small-group instruction, and one-to-one interventions where needed
• Work closely with families to share strategies and celebrate student progress
• Partner with external agencies and professionals to ensure holistic support for students
The Learning and Support Team (LST) also plays a key role in coordinating and supporting our support classes, ensuring consistency of practice, effective planning, and appropriate adjustments for all students.
We are committed to building an inclusive learning environment where every child is valued, supported, and able to thrive. If you have concerns about your child’s learning or support needs, please contact their class teacher in the first instance.
Contact us to meet with a member of this team to talk about your child’s strengths, interests and areas where they may need support.
